Self-service prepaid gift cards in Israeli supermarkets

A large supermarket chain in Israel has set up self-service kiosks so that its customers can buy personalized multi-brand gift cards at any time, valid in 82 stores throughout the country.
THE CHALLENGE
The brand had been offering a gift card service for many years, but issuing them in-store represented a significant workload for the staff and queuing up for the customer.
In 2019, the brand decided to install self-service kiosks to improve customer experience.
THE SOLUTION
105 kiosks are currently installed in supermarkets, shopping malls and large companies where employees can purchase the gift cards with a discount that the company gives them.
Evolis Israeli official partner Cardwiz Technologies and the system integrator Balamuth, the developer of that solution, have cooperated to bring this innovative solution to the marketplace.
The purchase process is very simple:
The buyer of the card can choose between several designs and then enter the name of the recipient. Following this, the buyer pays the card directly at the terminal with his credit card. The cards are pre-printed on the back and pre-encoded for payment. On the front, they are printed in color according to the design chosen by the customer.
The recipient of the gift card can spend the amount loaded on the card at any of the 82 stores nationwide.
Balamuth has developed a back-office tool that alerts when a cleaning, ribbon change or reordering of cards is needed. Balamuth is in charge of the maintenance of the kiosks (cleaning, change of consumables, refilling of the hoppers)
More than 2 million cards per year are sold, either directly in the store or via the kiosk.
